Owning an Audi might not be the status symbol of owning a Bugatti, but that doesn’t mean that there isn’t a lot of cultural value behind them. Plus, Audi owners often report just liking their vehicles and enjoying driving them. But, where are Audis made? Are they a U.S. company, or manufactured or assembled in the United States?

Audi – Part Of The Volkswagen Group

Audi isn’t a U.S. vehicle company. They’re German and have always been German. Like a lot of other German vehicle manufacturers, Audi is currently owned by the Volkswagen group, but they’ve been independent in the past and have gone through a lot of different owners over the years.

Is Audi Its Own Company, Or A Volkswagen Brand?

It’s normal for people to wonder if Audi is controlled by Volkswagen the same way Lexus is controlled by Toyota. After all, when a larger company acquires a car manufacturing company it seems natural that they would control what the smaller company produces and how they do it.

However, Volkswagen Group is a little different.

Partially because of how big Volkswagen Group is, and how many different car manufacturing companies they own, Volkswagen prefers to allow the companies under their umbrella to operate with a little more independence.

Of course, Volkswagen does insist on a certain level of quality, durability, and meeting sales goals, but they don’t necessarily control how the smaller companies under their umbrella meet those goals. Instead, Volkswagen prefers all of its brands to maintain a unique identity and to compete in their markets, even when they have multiple brands that are competing for the same customers.

That means that Audi still gets to have a unique brand identity and uniquely designed vehicles, even though they’re owned by the larger manufacturing Group.

Where Are Audis Made?

As a German company, it should come as no surprise that a lot of Audis are made in Germany. But, like most of the globally popular vehicle manufacturers, Audi has a list of global factories that their either control or contract with to produce Audi vehicles.

Audi headquarters are located in Ingolstadt, Germany. Audi also centers its German-ness as a company, and you’ll notice a particularly German culture even in their global factories, as a direct result of their strong corporate identity.

Audi Factories For The North American Market

Like a lot of car manufacturers, Audi offers slightly different vehicles to different markets and dedicates some of its factories to the production of vehicles for specific markets.

The North American market is one of the most important for all car manufacturers because the demand for vehicles is higher in North America than in most other parts of the world. Car culture is also stronger in the United States and Canada than in many other countries, which also increases the demand for luxury vehicles like Audi in addition to more common commuter vehicles.

That means that these factories are some of the most important Audi has, and also that they are producing one of Audi’s most diverse lineup of vehicles.

Ingolstadt, Germany

It probably shouldn’t be a surprise that a decent percentage of the Audis destined for sale in North America and similar markets are produced directly in Audi’s headquarters. The A5, A4, and A3 are all produced in Ingolstadt, among other factories, before being shipped to their final sale destinations.

Neckarsulm, Germany

A large number of Audi’s other vehicles, the A4, A5, A6, A7, and R8 are also produced at another German location. That makes sense since having the two factories both in Germany makes quality assurance easier, and also gives folks at headquarters easier access to a wider range of vehicles than just the ones produced at headquarters.

That way they can see more of Audi’s vehicles in action, see the wider assembly process for other vehicles, and otherwise check on and maintain Audi quality assurance.

Győr is home to a smaller factory in terms of the number of models produced. However, as home to the A3, TT, and Q3 models, and several styles each of the first two, it shouldn’t be overlooked. This is an important player in keeping North American markets supplied with some of their favorite Audis.

Brussels, Belgium

Car manufacturing might not be the first thing you think of when you picture Brussels, but Audi does have a car manufacturing factory in the famous city.

Responsible for the Audi e-tron, the Brussels facility might not produce as many vehicles as some of its sister factories, but it’s still an important part of the Audi lineup.

San José Chiapa, Mexico

Mexico being a lot closer to most of Audi’s North American market makes it an appealing location for another factory. Even though most of Audi’s factory presence is focused in Europe, they have factories all over the world.

This particular facility focuses on producing two different versions of the Audi Q5, which are then shipped to whichever destination market needs them at the moment.

There are other factories that also serve the North American market, as well as Audi’s other big markets, but these are the primary factories keeping Audi popular and profitable in North America.

The truth is that Audi has factories in Europe, Eurasia, Asia, and Central America. They’re all over the place, with plenty of different specializations to serve Audi, and Volkswagen’s, interests across the globe. It’s entirely possible that Audi will open new factories soon, or that they might be looking to get South American and North American factories that will provide a closer manufacturing base to some of the company’s biggest markets.

When a car manufacturing company is thriving, it’s impossible to predict where it’ll go next, or its next strategic moves.
